De artiesten uit deze podcast spelen goed leentjebuur bij de funk uit eind jaren 60 en eind jaren 70, maar niet alles is zo reactionair als dat klinkt. Leg Lee Fields of Bo Baral naast je best of cd’s van James Brown en ze lijken stylistisch als twee druppels water op de peetvader van de funk, hoewel je mij niet hoort klagen zolang ze ijzersterke nummers spelen. Luister naar The Poets of Rhythm of Didier’s Sound Spectrum en je hoort dat dit meer is dan retro. Niet voor niets mijn hedendaagse funk favorieten. TA

Mijn verhouding met disco is nogal een haat-liefde verhouding. Met eerlijk gezegd de nadruk op de haat, maar om te bewijzen dat er wel degelijk disco is die mijn goedkeuring kan wegdragen, of meer dan dat zelfs, staat de laatste Rundfunk podcast in het teken van de disco. De funky kant van de disco. Disco heeft meer dan eens zijn format verleend aan poppy muzak, maar de kern van disco: een four to the floor beat, percussie, chicken gitaar leent zich ook wel degelijk voor meer funky uitstapjes. En dat is een kant van de disco die in de vernieuwde aandacht voor de disco vorm nog steeds te weinig te horen is. TA

En dan wordt het ook maar weer eens tijd voor een eigen Rundfunk radio show. Aangezien de feestdagen weer aan het hek staan te rammelen, opnieuw ruim een uur feestelijke dansvloervullers. Haal die kalkoen uit de oven en zet je schrap.
We gaan van start met verse Latinfunk van de band Bronx River Parkway - ze hebben al enkele mooie singles met boogaloo en latinfunk uitgebracht, helaas nog geen LP - en Zweedse Matata-sampelende hiphoppers Speech Defect met in hun gevolg enkele bonafide klassieke en nieuwe funktracks.
Hoor in het verplichte boogaloo blokje bij The Latin Blues Band waar Christina Aguilera haar mosterd vandaan heeft! Verder nog het beste van Beyonce in tijden: Suga Mama funkt alsof het een oude New Orleans funktrack is, en hoewel de sample daar wellicht dan ook vandaan komt, maakt dat het niet minder smakelijk. Duitsers Radio Citizen & Bajka komen uit het Poets Of Rhythm hoekje en maken verfrissende en schurende hiphopsoul met The Hop. Wie dacht dat Radiohead niet funky kan klinken moet eens naar Mark Ronsons versie van Just luisteren, van de BBE compilatie Exit Music: Songs with Radio Heads. Afsluitend een herziene versie van Senna’s Have You Ever, we vonden dat het origineel wel wat extra Orientaalse drums kon gebruiken, dus hier een exclusieve Rundfunk verbouwing.TA
